Work and the Web

As many of you probably know. I have a bit of a passion when it comes to web design. I see how it works and I see how it can be optimized and made to be into something incredibly efficient as well as enjoyable to work with and use.

Which is why it depresses me so that our web site is so poorly designed. It was written with the mindset of people who learned the bare minimum of HTML and went to town. Complete with tables for layout and javascript image rollovers. Welcome to 1990.

Which is why I was so excited when one of the higher-ups announced to the community that they would be taking suguestions for a site redesign.

Huzzah! A chance to prove my worth in yet another arena! One that I feel I was more than adequate at. I would finally enact a change that I could feel proud of.

Except. There is the problem that is the current web administrator. The one that designed the current table-laiden monster.  He is the man behind the door, he is the one with all the keys to the web.  To do anything about the website, you have to do so with his blessing.

It’s about this time I realized my folly.  Sort of like falling down because of untied shoe-laces on the best day of your life.  I was so drained by the fact that no matter how much zeal I put into this, no matter how much factual data I back it up with, it still has to be approved of by the Web Administrator and the rest of the Seinor IT staff.

I know now why most companies are the way they are.  Slow, inefficent and all but ground to a halt.  Because intrenched ‘IT’ people have the seniority and therefore the say. No matter how much you want to change the world, or make something a little bit better, unless you are sitting on a large heap of cash, you’re better off shutting up and getting paid to do what you do.

I’m so depressed.

Update: There is also an independant group of students coming together to manage the various student-based orginization web sites.  I might go to that, too.  But I’m really not going to get my hopes up.

Awesome Funny Misc

Jobsville, Population: Me

Coming friday, to a life called ‘mine’ is:

JOB INTERVIEW 2006.NET XP Pro Edition!

That’s right. I’m getting a job interview with a certain law firm. If they like me enough, I could be making double what I normally make at my current job, doing essentially the same thing. Except I’d actually be working most of the time and not goofing off. Like what I’m doing now :O

Also. Target (the store) are a bunch of bastards. Twice as much Ed: Double the price. What rip-off-artists!

Yes, I’ve become such a console addict that I’m complaining about paying full retail price for a fairly new game for a current-generation console. Stupid SSB:M!

I’ve also started cutting most of the ‘computer’ out of ‘computer work’. Lugging around a laptop can be quite a chore (even if it is a sexy one). So, I’ve moved most of what I do and love onto a USB Flash Drive. In fact, I’m typing via Portable Firefox (since my boss gets all Spanish Inquisition on me when she sees any new applications installed that she doesn’t know about). Using tiny programs on a tiny drive just brings back the nostalga of the good ol’ days of DOS and dial-up BBS‘es.  Where men were men Ahhhh…

Anyway, I finally got paid a “normal” paycheck. You know, not one crippled by the holidays? Yeah. So now I can actually pay my bills. FANTASTIC!

So that’s all for now. Gots to study for more tests. Yippie!

Misc Rants

Frustration Levels Mounting…

Ok. I don’t hate my job at all. In fact, I love doing computer work. There comes a certain satisfaction for getting everything up and running perfectly, so that the system is humming like a well tuned engine.

However, there are many times when you run into people who simply do not know what they are talking about. Even if they appear/claim to be well qualified professionals, you just know they’re spouting B.S.

I need to relax. Help Desk is a difficult environment to work in and still stay objective. Besides, I’m not the one at risk if something blows up…

So, yes. I am doing werid crap to my site again. So sue me.

On second thought, don’t.

Really, I’m just kind of playing around while my bordem canibalizes my brain at work. Feel free to chastize me for not ‘working’ at work, but my duties for today are all but finished. So

Lorem Ipsum.

Edit: I’ve preserved my old drupal site, so, stop panicing

Update: Wow, I’m really kind of liking this built-in WYSIWYG editor

…is an abortion of a program.

Not only does it not play well with multi-user systems (like gasp windows xp), but it’s slow, ugly and breaks even basic UI guidelines.

It’s like throw up, on your computer, that you write shit with. I am so sick of having to support it here at work. I mean, I know a lot of unfortunate people still use it, but jesus. Every time you have to ‘fix it’ you end up having to tear through the registry. Yeah, that’s right, to fix WordPerfect so it works on multi-user accounts, YOU HAVE TO MODIFY THE REGISTRY.

What indeed.
